While it is silly to base very much on a brief immersion, an impressive degree of self sufficiency is apparent in Indonesia, of course manufacturing, engineering and processing are successful and day to day goods are locally made - textiles, shoes, bags, foods, everything as in our good old days before imports.
Many of the workers would have a low standard of living in a wicked climate and in polluted conditions so productivity is more an achievement. Prosperity is there but squalor is not unusual.
