Department Stores

The traditional Department Store, David Jones, has traded on this corner for years and at least one other company preceeded it, on the corner of Hunter and Perkins.
David Jones Stores originated in Sydney and were/are a stylish 'institution' there and many branch stores have opened.
Their catalogue was a classic edition particularly for families out in the 'bush' or country - naturally enough.
Hunter Street has long been closed to traffic and mall-ised.

Are these streets actually blocked or just marked with signs? What about environment friendly vehicles?

Your David Jones department store looks like and your description reminds me of what we used to have in nearby Dayton, Ohio. The "Rikes" store. Now, however, it was taken over by another large corporation and since then has gone out of business.

I didn't do much today but...

I did write about how people used to wear long underwear over winter or until we began to stink. You can find the link at the bottom of the post today.

karlis: road signs keep the cars away but a few bicycles and deliveries go into the mall. The street is covered in paving bricks -they are smoother than cobbled streets! Standard pollution control is part of car engines and some hybrid cars are catching on, from Toyota mainly, not just for the celebs!
